January 25th–Wellington Day Two

After sleeping in for half of the morning Anna and I stumbled out of bed and headed downtown. We were on a quest to find an art gallery we had seen the day before that was exhibiting some prints of Dr. Seuss’s work.  We couldn’t remember exactly where it was, cause we saw it in a starving, sleep deprived haze the morning before.  After about an hour of searching we finally found the gallery on a corner we had seemingly already passed a half of a dozen times before.  The gallery was displaying some of Seuss’s unorthodox taxidermy sculptures.  Animals of his own creation, which he used real antlers, beaks, etc in building.

From the gallery we walked to the Wellington Botanical Garden, which may be one of the most confusing public parks ever built.  It was amazingly beautiful though.

From the botanical gardens we drove across the bay to Wellywood, and the Weta Caves.  Weta Caves is surrounded by a lot of warehouses and storage (presumably related to filmmaking).  I was hoping that their collection of movie props would be a bit larger, but it was still fun geeking out at all of the movie memorabilia.  I was especially surprised to see a Meet the Feebles character tucked down in the corner of the displays.  I would have thought they’d be keen to leave that chapter behind.

After the Weta caves we went on a nighttime walk along the wharf, and found the copper statue that Wellington commissioned Weta Workshops to build.  Frankly it was a bit creepy stumbling upon the sculpture in the dark.

Later on our walk we were standing on a bridge, looking down into the spotlight lit water, when a sea ray glided like a ghost across the ocean floor.  The spotlight light him up bright white as it floated through the water.  It was almost eerie, but fascinating.
