January 15th, 2010 - Piha Beach (Pre-Road Trip)

A short drive from Auckland, through the Waitakere range, we arrived at Piha beach. Piha is a tiny surfing community with fine black iron sand. It's advertised as the most famous surfing beach in New Zealand. The view from the hill above Piha was gorgeous.

Just look at it!

For the first thirty minutes we drove up and down the main road looking for a phantom fish and chips joint, which ended up being tucked away on a road that I don’t think had an inlet or outlet (we followed our noses through a holiday park, and over a small foot bridge to find it). The fish and chips shack was my first introduction to the stinginess of New Zealand food vendors. The food was perfectly greasy and offensive, but a small cup of tartar sauce cost nearly as much as the actual entrĂ©e. Having to pay for dipping sauces never ceases to offend me. I’m a cheap bastard.

The weather was really windy and the hot black sand blew everywhere, stinging like crazy. It peppered our already overly salted fish and chips. We tried to hide at the feet of Lion Rock and explored the tide pools along the base. Whilst hiding from the sand we gawked at a couple of grope-tastic teens, and contemplated whether public displays of affection were still rude when we were the ones doing the displaying. "Well we aren't teens, so it's more legit."

Later we explored the southern beach and discovered a large crevice in the side of the bluffs that ran all the way through the rock to the surf on the other side.

Anna's shrieks echoed beautifully as she waded into the thigh high cold water.

I have short legs so the cold water was already raising up to my crotch

And no day would be complete without Anna flaunting her youth in front of a bunch of exhausted old tourists.

I thought they looked like the elderlies from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - where they share the same bed. Awww. Isn't it just so sweet?
